Editing variants for an existing product

You can edit and remove variants for a product on its details page. This gives you the flexibility to change the variants that you sell for a product at any time.

Change variant details

You can change the details for a specific variant. For example, you can change the price of the variant, or change its image.

If you're editing a variant for the online store and you selectContinue selling when out of stock, then you can continue selling products when your inventory reaches zero and below. For example, you have zero stock but are using a product listing as a pre-order and want customers to be able to buy the product. As the product is purchased, your stock levels will drop below zero. However, if you deselect this option because you don't want to sell a product that has sold out, then customers can't buy the product.

The procedure forediting individual variants for stores with one locationis different than the method that you use forstores with multiple locations. For stores with one location, you must select a variant before you can edit its details. For stores with multiple locations, you can edit details without selecting the variant first.

Edit variant details for stores with one location

  1. From your Shopify admin, go toProducts.

  2. Click the name of the product that has the variant that you want to edit.

  3. In theVariantssection of the product details page, clickEditbeside the name of the variant that you want to edit.

  4. Change the variant details.

  5. Optional: You can apply the same weight to all product variants by checking theApply weight to all variants for [your product].

  6. ClickSave.

  1. From theShopify app, go toProducts>All products.
  2. From theAll productsscreen, tap the product that you want to edit.
  3. From the product details screen, tap the variant that you want to edit.
  4. On the variant details screen, edit the variant's information.
  5. Tap the product's name to return to its details screen.
  6. TapDone.
  1. From theShopify app, go toProducts>All products.
  2. From theProductsscreen, tap the product that you want to edit.
  3. From the product details screen, tap the variant that you want to edit.
  4. On the variant details screen, edit the variant's information.
  5. Tap✓.

Edit variant details for stores with multiple locations

If your store uses multiple locations, then the procedure that you use to edit variants is different than it is for stores with only one location.

You can quickly edit the prices, quantities, SKUs, barcodes, weights, HS codes (tarrifs), or country/region of origin for all the variants of a product, without selecting the variants first.

Steps:

  1. In theVariantssection, clickEditabove the list of variants.
  2. Choose which variant detail you would like to edit.
  3. In theEditdialog, change the relevant details for a variant. Some details will have the option toApply to allvariants in the list to save time.
  4. ClickDone.
  5. ClickSave.

Edit multiple details in the bulk editor

Steps:

  1. In theVariantssection, select which variants you want to edit using the checkboxes. You can use theSelectoptions at the top of the variants list to quickly select all variants of the same option.
  2. ClickBulk edit.
  3. On theBulk editorpage, enter your changes in the related fields.
  4. ClickSave.

Change the display order of variants

When your customers are view your products, variant options and values display in a particular order. You can change the display order on the product details page.

When you re-order variants, the order in which they display depends on the variants that the product has. If the product doesn't have a variant matching the order that you set, then the order of variants is adjusted depending on what variants the product has.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go toProducts.

  2. Click the name of the product whose options you want to re-order.

  3. In theVariantssection of the product details page, drag the option to move it to a different position. When a customer is on the product page, the options for this product display in the order that you set.

  4. After you have the options in the order that you want, you can change the display order of the option values. ClickEditnext to the option whose values you want to re-order. Then drag an option value to move it to a different position and clickDone. When a customer is on the product page, the option values for each option display in the order that you set.

  5. ClickSave.

Edit a product's options and values

You can add, remove, or edit options and option values from the product details page.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go toProducts.

  2. Click the name of the product that you want to edit.

  3. In theVariantssection, do any of the following:

    • To add a new option, click+ Add another optionand enter the option name and a default option value. The default option value is applied to all the existing variants. You can have a maximum of three options for a product.
    • To change an option name, clickEditand enter the new name.
    • To delete an option value, clickEditand click the trash icon next to the value you want to delete. If there is only one option value listed, then you must delete the option entirely to remove the value.
    • To delete an option entirely, click the trash can icon beside the option name.
  1. From theShopify app, go toProducts>All products.
  2. From theAll productsscreen, tap a product.
  3. In theVariantssection, do any of the following:
    • To add a new option, tapEdit>Add optionand enter the option name and a default option value. The default option value is applied to all the existing variants. You can have a maximum of three options for a product.
    • To change an option name, tapEditand then tap the option that you want to rename and enter the new name.
    • To delete an option value, clickEditand tap the option with that value in it. Click the trash icon next to the value you want to delete.
    • To delete an option entirely, click the trash can icon beside the option name. If the option has one value available, and you delete that value, it will delete the option entirely.
  4. When you're finished, tapDoneto apply your changes.
  5. TapSaveto save the product.
  1. From theShopify app, go toProducts>All products.
  2. From theAll productsscreen, tap a product.
  3. In theVariantssection, do any of the following:
    • To add a new option, tap⋮>Edit options>Add option, and enter the option name and a default option value. The default option value is applied to all the existing variants. You can have a maximum of three options for a product.
    • To change an option name, tap⋮>Edit optionsand then tap the option that you want to rename and enter the new name.
    • To delete an option value, click⋮>Edit optionsand tap the option with that value in it. Click the trash icon next to the value you want to delete.
    • To delete an option entirely, click the trash can icon beside the option name. If the option has one value available, and you delete that value, it will delete the option entirely.
  4. When you're finished, tap✓to apply your changes.
  5. Tap✓to save the product.

Editing a metafield for a variant

You can add custom fields to your variant details pages by usingmetafields. Metafields display in an editable table on your variant details pages. Each metafield displays the name that you select when youcreate your metafield definition. You can click in each table row to display the metafield type and its description, and then click in the field to enter a value.

Delete a variant

When you delete a variant, it is permanently removed.

If you don't want to sell a product with variants any more, then you need to delete all its variant options and values, including the default. Otherwise, the drop-down menu to select a variant continues to display to your customers.

To delete multiple variants at the same time, use abulk action.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go toProducts.

  2. Click the product with the variant that you want to delete.

  3. UnderVariants, select the checkbox next to the variant.

  4. Click...and then clickDelete variant.

  2. From theAll productsscreen, tap the product that you want to update.
  3. UnderVariants, tap the variant that you want to delete.
  4. At the bottom of the variant details screen, tapDelete variant.
  5. If you're sure that you want to delete this variant, then tapDeleteto remove it from your store.
  1. From theShopify app, go toProducts>All products.
  2. From theProductsscreen, tap the product that you want to update.
  3. UnderVariants, tap the variant that you want to delete.
  4. At the bottom of the variant details screen, tapDELETE VARIANT.
  5. If you're sure that you want to delete this variant, then tapDELETEto remove it from your store.
