Changes to account billing for India

The Reserve Bank of India has new guidelines for theprocessing of recurring online payments. As a result, PayPal is no longer supported as a payment method.

To comply with the Reserve Bank of India’s guidelines, you can nowpay your Shopify bills in Indian rupees (INR).

Making bill payments in Indian rupees (INR)

You can pay for your Shopify bills in INR using Unified Payments Interface (UPI), or a co‑branded debit or credit card on a Visa, Mastercard, or American Express network.

Add card payment method

To set up recurring bill payments in INR, confirm that yourstore’s billing addressis in India and yourbilling currency被设置在R before adding or re-entering your credit or co‑branded debit card. Your card needs to be issued from asupported bank and card networkand have a billing address in India.

To comply with the Reserve Bank of India's guidelines for processing recurring online payments, Shopify bill payments are processed through Razorpay, a secure payment partner. Adding or re-entering your card connects you to Razorpay, where you establish a mandate that permits Shopify to automatically charge your card each month. Whenever this mandate is used to charge your card, your bank sends a pre-debit notification to you through SMS, giving notice that Shopify will charge your card in 24-48 hours.

If the charge exceeds 15,000 INR, then you need to complete an additional authentication step through the pre-debit SMS notification.

  1. Log in to your Shopify store as thestore owner.
  2. From your Shopify admin, go toSettings>Billing.
  3. In thePayment methodssection, do one of the following:
    • If you're adding a new card, then click取代信用卡.
    • If you're re-entering your card, then click the...button beside your card, and then clickReplace.
  4. Enter your card information and billing address.
  5. Click取代信用卡. This activates a redirection to Razorpay. If you receive an error message stating that your card isn't supported, then the card and its issuing bank don't support recurring online payments. Try again with a different card.
  6. Approve the mandate through Razorpay.

Troubleshoot bill payments in INR

If yoursupported card'spayment attempt fails, then contact the bank that issued your card to confirm that recurring payments are enabled for that card.

Add Unified Payments Interface (UPI) payment method

If you have a UPI ID, payment app, and PIN, then you can add UPI as your primary payment method for Shopify bills.

To set up automated bill payments, confirm that yourstore’s billing addressis in India and yourbilling currency被设置在R. Next, use your UPI payment app to establish a mandate that permits Shopify to automatically debit your Shopify bill from your bank account each month.

If your bill is greater than 5,000 INR, then you need to log in to your Shopify admin to approve each bill payment.

  1. From your Shopify admin, go toSettings>Billing.
  2. In thePayment methodssection, clickSet up UPI.
  3. In theSend your UPI ID for verificationdialog, enter your UPI ID.
  4. ClickSend.
  5. On your mobile device, use your UPI payment app to approve the mandate and enter your UPI PIN.
  6. On your billing settings page, confirm the status of your UPI setup:
    • If the UPI setup was successful, thenUPIis saved asPrimaryin thePayment methodssection.
    • If the UPI setup was unsuccessful, then an alert suggests that you try again or add a different UPI ID.

Outstanding USD bills reissued in INR

If theReserve Bank of India's guidelineshave prevented you from making your Shopify bill payments in USD, then any outstanding USD bills are reissued to you in Indian rupees (INR).

Payment due dates for reissued bills are staggered and payment deadlines are 90 days after each reissued bill's due date. Outstanding USD bills from the same month are grouped together and reissued to you as a single INR bill. You can view a schedule detailing payment due dates for your outstanding bills in your Shopify admin. You can choose to pay any outstanding bill before its due date.

View and pay outstanding bills

  1. Log in to your Shopify store as thestore owner.

  2. From your Shopify admin, go toSettings>Billing.

  3. In theBillssection, clickView all billing history

  4. On theBilling historypage, clickOpento view all outstanding bills.

  5. Click the bill that you want to pay.

  6. ClickPay bill.
