Free themes are great if you’re just starting youronline business. Intuitive and flexible, they’re super fast (as long as you don’t add videos or tons of images) while still letting you tweak your store to make it unique. Premium themes are created by the world’s leading agencies in theme UX, design, and development and offer more features and customization options. For example, they allow you to add things like animations and popup product details on hover, and even let you change the spacing between letters.

All premium themes are heavily vetted for quality, performance, and accessibility to ensure merchants are getting the best quality possible.

High performance and load speed is integral to Shopify Themes. Every theme is rated by the industry standard Lighthouse Score. Lighthouse scores, ranging from 0 to 100, rate web pages according to performance, accessibility, best practices, SEO and Progressive Web App (PWA). All our themes have a minimum score of 60 upon launch. Created with minimal code, all Shopify Themes also have some neat things built in to improve the perception of speed for your buyers. That’s not to say your theme will always be fast—using heavy images, video or lots of apps will definitely have an impact.

An accessible storefront expands your pool of potential buyers to include 15% of the global population who live with disabilities. Shopify Themes strive to meet modern accessibility requirements, from keyboard navigation to screen reader compatibility. All Shopify Themes have a minimum average Lighthouse accessibility score of 90 across the theme’s product, collection, and home page for both desktop and mobile. We’re committed to providing out-of-box support for a wide range of assistive technologies.

With each Shopify Theme, you'll have access to all future updates and added features at no additional cost. If you're using a free theme from Shopify, then Shopify support might be able to help you with small changes to your theme. If you're on the Basic Shopify Plan or higher, you can use up to 60 minutes of free design support, broken out into 15-minute increments. These 15-minute design sessions can be used to add specific features to a theme. There are currently 13 supported customizations Shopify Theme Support can help implement.

You can add a free theme via your Shopify Admin, or you can try a paid theme from the Shopify Theme Store. You can preview any theme and customize it using the theme editor, but you’ll need to purchase a theme before you can publish it to your online store. If you already have a theme in a ZIP file on your computer, then you can upload it.
